The OMHA will be following Hockey Canada and Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) requirements* for coaches entering the 2024-25 season.

The outlined requirements will be for all coaches (local league or Rep) who wish to be rostered to a team. Previously trained coaches may have attained many of the requirements.

  • Head Coaches taking a clinic for the first time will not be required to have a certified status to be rostered for the current season.
  • Coaches who currently have D1 'Trained' status and wish to become 'Certified' will have to complete the Making Ethical Decisions Evaluation, the D1 Work Book and then be evaluated by a D1 Field Evaluator. More information is available here.
  • Coaches with an expiring or expired certified status are required to participate in professional development to maintain their certified status. For information on certification maintenance, click HERE.
  • A Head Coach can be conditionally approved if they are enrolled in an OMHA Development 1 clinic or a Development 1 clinic within the Ontario Hockey Federation before December 31st.

CERTIFICATION MAINTENANCE

If you are currently D1 certified and it has not expired or are getting D1 certified, you will need to earn 20 Professional Development (PD) points every 5 years to maintain your certification and avoid having to retake the D1 course.

PD Points can be earned by:

  • taking online or in-person clinics offered by OMHA
  • by taking online clinics offered by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC)
  • you will earn 1 PD point for each year you actively coach. You will need to self-report these in 'The Locker' (see below)

To sign up for clinics offered by the CAC and monitor your D1 status you will need to register yourself with the national Coach Certification Program (NCCP) as this is what Hockey Canada uses to track coaches. Once registered with the NCCP, you will have access to your coaching transcript through what is called 'The Locker'.
