Landscaping Atom girls punch ticket to league final
Netminder Cousineau sharp in 1-0 victory over Sarnia Lady Sting Sunday

By Pat Payton

It appears that the Landscaping Atom ‘C’ girls have punched their ticket to the WOGHL final in Group 2.

Ray Cousineau’s squad emerged with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Sarnia Lady Sting on Sunday at the PRC. “The win puts us in first place in the league playoffs,” coach Cousineau said. “The top two teams will play a series, once the round-robin in pool two is done.”

Sunday’s victory improved St. Marys’ playoff record to 3-1-1.

The Landscaping crew has one more game, against Woodstock Wildcats (on Mar. 15), in the round-robin format. In addition to St. Marys, Sarnia and Wallaceburg are the other teams competing in the round-robin.

“We’ll be in the second pool, and we’ll probably meet Woodstock (in the final) if they win,” Cousineau said. “There are about four or five groups.”

In Sunday’s game, a first-period goal by Brooklynn Roth stood up as the game winner against Sarnia. Assists went to Alyssa Payne and Emma Hodkinson.

The star of the game for the Rock was goalie Aubrey Cousineau, who earned her shutout with a couple of huge stops late in the second period and two more in the final six minutes of the third.

The Sting pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with over a minute remaining, but the St. Marys defenders did a good job of keeping the puck out of their own zone as they run down the clock.

First game of twinbill

Earlier in the day on home ice, the Landscaping Atoms lost 1-0 to Central Perth, which ended the Rock’s chances of advancing to the year-end Provincials in April. “Central Perth has six points and we have five, so Central Perth will get the chance to represent this area at Provincials,” coach Cousineau explained.
