Landscaping Atoms reach semi-finals at Int. Silver Stick
By Pat Payton
The Landscaping Atom ‘C’ girls reached the semi-finals here at the International Silver Stick tournament recently.
Ray Cousineau’s squad played their first two games on the Friday, losing 1-0 to Chatsworth Rebels and 2-0 to West Oxford Inferno.
“We’ve been playing decent hockey, it’s just that the teams we’re playing are pretty strong,” coach Cousineau reported. “We played well enough to win those games, but we didn’t have any puck luck around their net.”
On the Saturday morning, the Rock skated to a 3-0 victory over the host Saugeen Shores Storm.
Emma Hodkinson had two goals for St. Marys, including one into an empty net. Joey Binning scored the other marker, and Aubrey Cousineau picked up the shutout.
In their fourth round-robin game Saturday afternoon, the Landscaping Atoms lost 6-0 to a strong Kincardine Kinucks team.
On Sunday morning, the Landscaping Atoms advanced to the semi-finals, where they met the same Kinucks team. This time, Kincardine won 5-0 -- eliminating the Rock team.
St. Marys managed just one shot on net in both games against Kincardine, coach Cousineau reported. “It was frustrating.”
“But our team never quit,” Cousineau pointed out. “We worked until the final buzzer. I was very proud of the girls. They made us proud by playing that way.
“Getting to the semi-finals is an accomplishment I think,” he added.
Note: Kincardine, which allowed just one goal against in six games, defeated West Oxford 5-0 in the Atom ‘C’ final.
