Welcome to 2019/20 Season!

Welcome to the 2019/20 SMMHA ROCK Hockey season!

September is always a busy month with kids and parents getting back into the routines of school, work and hockey! The SMMHA staff have been busy planning and organizing for the upcoming season to ensure this will be a great experience for all involved.

Hockey is a great sport that helps kids learn what it means to be a part of a team, understand their own abilities and to set goals, learn how to navigate a competitive environment, exercise their physical and mental state, and build long lasting friendships.

How do I get information on what to expect, other information and ice times?

Each year there are changes introduced by Hockey Canada, OMHA/OWHA and/or SMMHA. We have been issuing email messages to parents/players impacted by any program changes to ensure people are kept informed.

For our Initiation Program (Pre-IP, Jr IP, Sr IP) parents/players an email will come out in the first week of September sharing specific information for the IP Division.

It is important for all parents/players to use the SMMHA website as their key place for all information and ice times. The website contains important information on policies, parent handbook, tryout information and team specific ice times etc. Once Labour Day passes, the website is usually complete and up-to-date with any final schedule etc. changes. You can also sign-up for calendar feeds to your personal calendar (once you know the team you will play for), alerts for news articles and twitter posts. Please take some time to navigate the website to locate information helpful to you.

The website also contains key contacts should you need to connect with someone from SMMHA. https://smmha.ca/

All team coaches will hold a parent meeting once the final team is selected. These meetings are helpful to learn more about the coaching staff, expectations for players and parents, assignment of team duties, upcoming season games and tournaments etc.

What’s happening the first few weeks in September?

Boys Rep (BB/AE) team tryouts begin the first week in September so if your player wishes to try out, please refer to the website for the tryout policy/details and ice times.

In addition, our girls teams held tryouts last spring so team practice ice times will begin the first week as well. Please refer to the calendar on the website for details.

If you are interested in coaching a local league team, please complete the online coaching application located on the website. You will be contacted regarding your interest in coaching one of our LL teams.

How can I help with Minor Hockey?

Minor hockey is all about the kids and having a great experience. This can only happen with volunteers (coaches, staff, Directors, helpers etc). We are always looking for volunteers to help run minor hockey. If you would like to become involved (a little or a lot), please speak with one of the SMMHA staff (contacts on website) or attend an upcoming minor hockey meeting always the first Tuesday of each month (refer to website calendar for dates/times).

Again, welcome to a new season of hockey and we expect this will be another great experience!
