St. Marys minor hockey teams have now completed their Shamrock League regular schedules. The following is a summary, detailing how each SMMHA team did in its respective SHL division.

Finnbilt ‘BB’ Novices

The Finnbilt ‘BB’ Novices tied for fifth place in the Novice Central standings with an 8-10-2 record. Todd Dittmer’s squad posted a respectable 5-3-2 record in their last league 10 games.

In their final SHL game before Christmas, Declan McCotter fired five goals in a 9-2 Rock victory over the Oilers in Petrolia.

The Novices carried that momentum to their Regional Silver Stick tournament in Pelham, where they reached the semi-finals.

Golf & Country Club ‘BB’ Atoms

The Golf and Country Club ‘BB’ Atoms finished second overall in the Atom Central standings. Reg Clinton’s squad had a record of 11-3-2, ending up just two points behind Mooretown Jr. Flags (12-2-2).

The Atom Rock, who went 6-2-2 in their last 10 games, allowed only 24 goals against in 16 league games this season.

The G&CC Atoms also played well in Pelham recently, advancing to the Silver Stick semi-finals.

Dunny’s Source for Sports A-E Atoms

The Dunny’s Sports A-E Atoms were involved in a lot of close games this Shamrock season, posting a 6-6-8 won-loss-tied record. In 20 league games, Matt King’s crew scored 49 goals and allowed 49.

This weekend (Jan. 10-13), the Dunny’s Atoms are one of three SMMHA A-E teams that will compete in the International Silver Stick tournament in Pelham.

Firefighter ‘BB’ Peewees

The Firefighter ‘BB’ Peewees had the best Shamrock record among SMMHA teams. Dwain Smith’s squad earned an impressive 13-0-3 record to finish in first place in the Peewee Central standings--eight points ahead of three other teams.

In 16 undefeated games, Firefighters scored a division-high 81 goals and surrendered a division-low 30 goals.

“First overall, we’re proud of that,” coach Smith said. “We’re deep throughout. We can run three lines, we have solid defence and good goaltending. We’re hoping to have a good run in the playoffs.”

Firefighters’ captain Ryan Hodkinson, meanwhile, recently reached the 50-goal plateau and 100 points for the season.

Home Building Centre A-E Peewees

Coach Sean Porter and his Home Building Centre A-E Peewees hope to play their best hockey of the season in the New Year, with International Silver Stick (Jan. 10-13) and OMHA playoffs just ahead.

In 20 SHL games, the HBC squad finished with a 7-12-1 record--going 3-7 in their final 10 league games.

ANAF ‘BB’ Bantams

The ANAF ‘BB’ Bantams (14-4-2) put on a late-season push in Shamrock action, and finished just four points behind first-place Strathroy Jr. Rockets. Brandon Boyd’s charges were 5-0-1 in their last six games and 6-2-2 in their final 10 games.

Overall, the second-place ANAF squad gave up just 27 goals against in 20 SHL games--best in the Bantam Central division.

The Bantam Rock was another St. Marys ‘BB’ team to reach the semi-finals at the recent Silver Stick tournament in Pelham. Second-year forward Ben Richardson suffered a broken wrist at the tourney and coach Boyd admits it’s a “major blow” to the team with OMHA playoffs just ahead.

However, Boyd remains hopeful. “I firmly believe we can play with any team we come across. If we can stay healthy and focused, this (Silver Stick) experience should motivate us for a lengthy OMHA run ahead.”

Frayne Custom Cabinets A-E Bantams

The Frayne Custom Cabinets A-E Bantams were another SMMHA team which had a strong Shamrock regular season.

Dale Switzer’s Bantams (13-4-3) finished just one point behind Mt. Brydges (14-4-2) in the battle for top spot. In 20 league games, the Rock allowed only 29 goals against. The team was 6-2-2 in its last 10 SHL games.

After being finalists at their Regional Silver Stick tourney in Collingwood, the Frayne squad was recently invited to compete in the International event in Pelham, Jan. 10-13.

Cement Major ‘BB’ Midgets

After a shaky stretch through late November and early December, the Cement Major ‘BB’ Midgets finished their Shamrock schedule strong -- with three wins and a tie.

Overall, Brent Nairn’s Cement men had a record of 6-11-3 in the Midget Central division.

All SMMHA teams are now preparing for upcoming provincial playdowns.
