DELHI - The Firefighter ‘BB’ Peewees have a great record in tournaments this 2018-19 season. Dwain Smith’s squad has entered three tourneys to date, winning two of them and finishing second in the other.

Firefighters’ latest tournament victory came in Delhi on the Nov. 29-Dec. 2 weekend. The Rock swept all five of their games to capture the Tabacco Town Tournament undefeated.

After defeating Burford 7-2 in their opening game on the Friday night, the Peewees knocked off Tillsonburg 7-1 and Simcoe 3-1 in their next two games on the Saturday. The Rock continued their winning ways in the semi-finals Sunday, defeating Thorold 6-1, and then besting Mooretown Jr. Flags 6-3 in the final later in the afternoon.

“On the Sunday, we played well,” coach Smith told the Independent.

In the five games in Delhi, the Peewees out-scored their opponents 29-8.

Delhi scoring summaries

In their opening game on the Friday night, centreman Ryan Hodkinson sparked the Firefighters’ attack against Burford with a three-goal, two-assist performance. Linemates Finn Stewart and Peyton Lobb also contributed in a big way, with Stewart clicking for two goals and an assist and Lobb picking up three assists.

Colton Henderson and Jayden Tipping scored the other St. Marys goals, and Griffin McGregor chipped in with two assists as the Rock built period leads 2-0 and 5-2.

In their second game, four first-period goals helped St. Marys defeat Tillsonburg. Pacing the Firefighters’ offence were Griffin McGregor and Nate Schiedel, each with two goals and an assist. The singles came off the sticks of Peyton Lobb, Ryan Hodkinson and Brock Chessell. Hodkinson also earned two assists for a three-point outing, and goalie Carter Froggett was outstanding. He lost his shutout bid in the final minute of the game.

Against Simcoe, captain Hodkinson was involved in all three St. Marys goals as he scored twice and helped set up the other by Griffin McGregor. Peyton Lobb helped out with two assists.

The Rock led 2-0 after the first period and 3-0 going into the final 10 minutes.

Natural hat trick

In their semi-final game, a natural hat trick in the third period by Ryan Hodkinson helped Firefighters pull away on Thorold. Five of the six St. Marys goals came in the final 15 minutes.

Adding the singles for the Rock were Nate Schiedel, Lucan Vernooy and Finn Stewart, and Peyton Lobb contributed two assists.

In the final, the Firefighters’ big line of Hodkinson, Stewart and Lobb powered the Firefighters’ attack against Mooretown. All three players fired two goals, and the high-scoring trio combined for 11 points. Hodkinson collected three assists and Lobb helped set up two goals.

Defenceman Adam Turner was another playmaker with three assists, and Froggett notched the net win.

“Mooretown had one guy who did all the damage for them,” coach Smith noted. “In their last two games, he got all seven of their goals, and we used a couple of kids to shut him down.”

Earlier tournaments

In earlier tournaments this season, Firefighters were finalists at the Dan Bell Memorial tournament in South Muskoka--losing to Temiskaming in the final.

The following weekend, the Rock bounced back and won the 63rd annual Mitchell Peewees tournament. In five consecutive wins, Firefighters allowed only six goals against, and defeated Shamrock rival Dorchester Dragons 5-0 in the championship game.

Notes:

--Captain Ryan Hodkinson finished the Delhi tournament with 11 goals and nine assists for 20 points in five games.

“Ryan’s been playing so well,” coach Smith said. “He has 80-some points on the season, and half of them are assists. That tells me he’s a team player.”

--Dwain Smith and his Firefighters will soon be heading to Watford to compete in the Roy Caley Memorial (Regional) Silver Stick tournament, Dec. 20-23. A victory there will earn the Rock a berth in the International Silver Stick event in Port Huron, Mich. early in the New Year.

“I’m really happy with the team’s play right now; they’re a hard-working bunch,” Smith said. “They’re playing as a team and all three lines and the two sets of defence are contributing. And both goalies are playing well. We’re always finding a way to win.”
